Does God have EMOTIONS?
Does God have emotions?
YES! God most certainly does have emotions. In fact, as His image-bearers, humans were given our ability to have and express emotions by God. But God’s emotions are not like OURS - so often, inconsistent, inaccurate, or all over the map, as propelled by feelings that can be highly inaccurate or totally wrong. As God’s emotions are ALWAYS in perfect sync with who He is – which is totally perfect in every way. He never changes. He IS truth. He is the very greatest definition of love. But God's love is not fickle like human love - as it is decisive and in perfect harmony with His other divine attributes!
In Luke 19, Jesus – the Son of God / also FULLY God, as He entered Jerusalem as long prophesied – in a moment one might think He would emotionally process as triumphant – instead brought Him great sadness because, as God, He knew all of the future and that most of Israel would reject Him, their prophesied Messiah. Here he was at their capitals gates, and they didn’t understand and would refuse Him:
“41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
In Luke 13, we likewise see what Jesus was thinking upon His entrance to the Jerusalem, that God longs to love humans, but people are so often resistant to and deny Him:
“34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!”
And YET, Jesus obediently went to the cross to provide those who will accept and embrace Him, salvation and a glorious eternal life with Him. Jesus / God loved humanity so deeply that He was willing to die a hideous, humiliating death, while people jeered and spit upon Him – THAT is exactly how deep God’s decisive emotion of love was expressed for a broken world!
