Question on regarding Greek in Matthew 6:22

Post by AmbrusFernas »

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.”

I’m curious for some different perspectives on whether this is referring to your eyes/sight as a whole, a singular eye, understanding or all of the above?

On the surface it seems to be talking about having “ dead eyes” or “ lifeless eyes”. Looking at the Greek though I noticed the singular ὀφθαλμός is used and not the plural οφθαλμοί. I know some modern versions translate as the plural “Eyes”, but in the manuscripts I saw it’s the singular. If we jump back to 5:29 the same singular ὀφθαλμός is used as well and contextually is clearly singularly.
